But high adoption comes with high risks
As digital payments surge, so do the security and compliance risks they bring with them. The very nature of entering and retrieving sensitive data online provides bad actors with ample opportunity to attack.
Merchant losses due to online payments fraud are predicted to exceed
$362 billion
globally between 2023 to 20282
And in the travel industry, where high-value bookings and payments are largely made online, the stakes are higher. In fact, RSA Security and Juniper Research found that that a staggering 46% of all fraudulent transactions occur in the airline industry3.

The rise of security-conscious consumers
Travelers are all too aware of the threat of online payments fraud. So much so that perceptions of a travel providers’ level of security are influencing buying behaviors; our recent survey revealed travelers would require a significant 38% discount (on average) to be persuaded to book with an airline where their payment details were less protected.4
For airlines, one thing is clear. If you want to attract and retain customers, their payments security must be your priority.

Our traveler research study revealed that:
50%
have been the victim
of payments fraud5
64%
think rates of payments fraud are increasing5
75%
believe payment security is important when choosing a travel provider6

Complacency comes at a cost
When it comes to payments security, failing to act can be as serious as the threats posed.
Without measures in place to mitigate the challenges of today’s travel payments, airlines are risking:
Financial and
reputational damage
Fraud and data breaches continue to apply substantial impact on businesses year after year. Not only do these incidents threaten huge financial losses but can destroy a brand’s hard-earned image in an instant.
Operational
inefficiencies
Without resilient processes in place, businesses are slowly depleting their precious time, money and resources. Whether it’s unpicking preventable mistakes, or spending extra hours on support, weak defenses reduce profits and increase inefficiencies.
Poor traveler
experiences
A staggering 35% of travelers do not trust travel companies to keep their payments data secure7. Broken trust not only risks cart abandonment, but creates a barrier between customers and seamless, convenient payment experiences.

What if you could eliminate the risk of card data falling into the wrong hands?
Outpayce Payments Tokenization makes it possible.
Tackling the vulnerabilities of today's digital payment methods, the solution replaces sensitive card data captured in a transaction with non-sensitive data, called 'tokens'.
These alphanumeric tokens don't have any value or significance outside of the transaction — so even if they were exposed to unauthorized parties, they are completely meaningless. As a result, airlines don't own the data risk, removing sensitive card data from their systems.
Once tokens are generated, they are locked away in Outpayce's vault, ready for reuse when a traveler initiates a future transaction on that saved card.
The outcome? Airlines reduce their PCI DSS compliance burden and ease future payment friction — enabling seamless security across the entire traveler journey.

Protecting data exchange between partners
Unlock a new level of security and simplicity with Outpayce's Tokenization add-on modules. Take control of your sensitive data and effortlessly streamline compliance.
Our innovative online and offline security wall options dramatically reduce your PCI DSS scope when sharing sensitive card data with third parties letting you focus on growth with peace of mind.
Online security wall
Real-time protection for sensitive data
Ensure seamless and secure transactions by converting tokens back into their original form in real-time. This enables airlines to efficiently process and exchange sensitive information with their selected third-party providers — without exposing data to potential threats.
Offline security wall
A digital fortress for stored data
When sensitive card data within an SFTP file from an airline’s selected third-party provider is intercepted, the PAN is replaced with a secure token before transmission. Whether data is sent to the third party from the airline, this process ensures a secure Detokenization flow — fortifying your offline security infrastructure.
